“Why Do I Need to Know About Working at Heights?”

Said the Software PM Who Works at a Desk

Plot twist: There I was, watching my team on a skylift and ladders during my first installation project in Malaysia, my heart in my throat. As a software project manager, I never imagined I’d need to worry about heights until that day.

It was a wake-up call. Project management isn’t just about what happens on screens. Sometimes, it’s about making sure the person up there comes down safely.

The Lesson Learned

That day taught me a valuable lesson: You don’t need to know everything about something, but you should know something about everything.

Now, I ask about PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements before installations begin, not after seeing someone climb up. I even got certified as a Safety Champion with BizSafe Level 2 for our Singapore projects 🇸🇬.

The Bigger Picture

As project managers, our roles often extend far beyond what’s written in our job descriptions. Whether it’s safety protocols, team dynamics, or unexpected challenges, we need to be prepared to step up and take responsibility.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  1. Safety First: Always prioritize the well-being of your team.
  2. Be Proactive: Don’t wait for a problem to arise, ask questions and plan ahead.
  3. Expand Your Knowledge: Even if it’s outside your comfort zone, learning new skills can make you a better leader.

The Takeaway

My journey from a desk-bound PM to a safety-conscious leader has been eye-opening. I still get nervous watching installations, but now it’s with proper safety protocols in place. 🪺

Who else has discovered that their role was bigger than they initially thought? I’d love to hear your stories!
